gas gauge messed up

1996 olds delta 88, I have replaced the sending unit twice, replaced the dash cluster, checked the wiring from tank to the dash. Gauge will give a reading sometimes then drops to empty, GM dealer says it my be the computer, hate to buy a new computer on a may be.

I don't know if this is of any help to you, because you have already worked on the tank, but most of the gas gauge problems I have had (like you describe) ended up being caused by intermittent grounding of the sending unit. This may be more of a Michigan problem (heavy salt baths annually), but I have had to add a "ground strap" to the sending unit to solve it, for me. Good luck, and wear sensible shoes...

The ground appeared to be ok, but I will take your advice and add another ground strap.
