It just quit, since we have put new cap, rotor , wires and plugs, still would not start. We removed the ignition coil and had it tested and it was faulty, replace it. Car starts great, but only runs for awhile then quits, if you wait a few minutes it starts again and runs for short time and quits again. Runs for different amounts of time not consistant before it quits.

Help.

Jeff

any check engine lights while it's running?

have you tested/checked the fuel pump or filter? that would be a good culprit right there.. the few minutes you're waiting allows enough fuel through the filter to start it again, then once it's started, it's consuming fuel faster than the pump/filter supplies it, runs out, and won't start again for a few mins.

there are no check engine lights whil it is running. Nest step I guess check fuel filter and pump. Thanks

easiest way to do it, make sure there isn't an open flame around, relieve the fuel pressure, *schrader valve near the fuel filter*, unbolt the line from the rail *expect fuel to leak out* and turn the key to "on" when you do that, the fuel pump "primes" which creates pressure in the lines, and should cause some fuel to exit the line... best bet is to have the line in a cutopen soda bottle or something at this point, to recycle the life-juice... and to catch it so it doesn't go in someone's eyes or something.

Thanks for the info. We replaced fuel filter and it ran for about 30 minutes, thought the problem was solved. Took it for test drive and it quits just like before. There was no heat and temp went way up. Not sure this is related. It has sat for awhile and it has been cold here.

Back to square one.

Hi, try replacing the main relay from some other civic, sometimes they overheats and fails. Does the car stalls while in idle?

It does quit in Idle but only after awhile. We took the main relay out and checked continuity and it was fine.. Can it test ok and still heat up. My dad has a 95 Honda Accord would it have the same relay??

The main relay won't cause it to shut off.. mine has been bad for years.

The one from an accord isn't the same, but if you hear a click every time you turn your key to "on" then it's fine.

Check the fuel pump/filter/lines and make sure you're not leaking fuel or anything, check the ignitor and coil in the distributor under the rotor, and buy yourself a service manual.

Yes, it's possible for the Main Relay to malfunction even tho it passes continuity testing.

The main relay from the accord won't work in your civic, it does can fail because it is the responsible to give power (12v) to fuel pump and injectors. I suggest you to get a used one to make the test.
