Not sure how important it is, but i'm not sure what the model number/name is for the truck.

its just a small standard pick-up truck, basic as u can get. 1987 model.

the things he has complained about:

Black stuff comming from the tale pipe, as well as "whitish colored smoke"

Truck stalls every time he stops, unless he keeps gasing it.

He doesnt have the money to take it to a shop, but he can fix just about anything if he knows what the problem is.

any clue what could be causing these problems?

Whitesh exhaust usually means you are burning coolant. ==> typically a blown head gasket, cracked head, or the timing chain is worn out and wore a hole thru the timing chain cover (4 cyl engine).

Black smoke typically means it's running rich.

Grey smoke is usually burning oil.

Just some basics.

"Black stuff comming from the tale pipe, as well as "whitish colored smoke"

the white smoke indicates a blown head gasket and the blackish stuff is it smoke or gunk or what?

"truck stalls every time he stops, unless he keeps gasing it."

this is caused by a wrong idle setting on the caburator, adjust the idle screw.

Hope this helps

the stalling could also back up the blown HG (my truck stalled all the time when mine went)
