Rough accelloration

1999 1.8L turbo VW Beetle...just started to be very rough when accellorating.
Higher rpms runs smoother but low rpms very rough. Any ideas?

Try the easier and cheaper fixes first - new plugs followed by leads and then look at the coils.....maybe first thing look closely at the coils for electrical leakage signs like cracks. If all these are OK then fuel filter and air filter are next. After that it gets costly!!

Thank you for response...it is very good to know we were on the right track(as least to begin with)after further research on the internet we came to the same conclusion - try the plugs first(just have to locate them :))....then advance from there.

We are familiar with plugs and plug wires on american cars but the 'leads' and 'coils'(except in reference to old american cars) are new to us....so we need to get educated there.
Looking for Service Manual - need to find where the 'coils' are and where the 'fuel filter' is located.
Air filter and oil changed within last month(less than 1000 miles on them).
