3.1 engine swap has different wiring harness

I am in the process of doing an engine swap on my 1997 3.1 Lumina sedan. The main wiring harness on the original engine has two connectors, one has ten blades and the other has five. The engine I'm installing has one, large fifteen blade connector. Although most do, not all the wire colors match (UGH!) :banghead:

Is there a way to find out from the engine number what model of car an engine was made for? Or might there be an easier way to cross reference what the differences in the wiring harnesses might be?

I'm not a complete idiot but I'm definitely not an automotive electrician either. Wiring diagrams and schematics are a bit over my head. :screwy: Any help would be really appreciated.

What i would is verify the new engine has a mount/hole/whatever same as old engine for every sensor and such from old engine, then swap all the old engine parts onto new engine, and use old engine harness..

You really don't know what year the engine came out of? Undertaking without that info, you will need all the wiring and pcm from the donor car just for starters, some engine accessories are date coded for ID.

I foolishly assumed that the 3.1L engine was common and wouldn't pose any major problems. I bought it from EngineWorld USA in Oakland, CA from their online site and had it delivered. I'm going to call them today and see if they have a record of what it originally came out of.

BTW, thanks for the replies.

Who decided to send you this engine, seems someone had to say this would fit, I'd ask them what they know about this swap.

I just put a 93 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 into a 89 Chevy Cavalier Z24 that had a 2.8 and tho i had to use a few things off the 2.8 (wiring harness on engine) mounts, etc.. i had to get/buy nothing extra to swap.. Cant see yours being much different,
i know plenty of guys that swap a 3.4 into older Z24's as well easily. Even 3.8's but they require more electrical work,
