The electric fans stay running for about 4 minutes after the engine is turned off. There is also a slight humming sound along with it. The heater does heat. Could this be the thermostat that needs to be replaced as mentioned by another person with the same problem? Also the oil was changed and I noticed where the oil filter is under the car there is a little oil, like a leak. All the fluid levels are ok. Could the leak be the oil filter?

The first thing to know about oil and oil leaks is that a little bit of oil goes a long way. Just a drop of oil can make it look like you are leaking oil more than you are. As engines accumulate more mileage they begin to consume and weep oil around various gaskets. This is normal. You mentioned that you just had your oil changed and I would guess what you are seeing is the old oil that spilled out on to the suspension cradle when they changed the oil filter. If you have the time you might turn your steering wheel to the far right and reach in to the tire well to see if the oil filter is hand tight. It will help to wipe it off first and then try to turn it clockwise. If it moves you will know that the filter was loose. Something else to consider is that when the oil filter is reinstalled the technician places a little oil around the oil filter gasket to help it seat against the flange. This "squishes" out if you will, and makes the filter look like it is leaking. The thing to really notice is what color is the oil? If it looks like maple syrup/ clean oil then something needs to be tightened. If it is black then it is old oil that spilled out on to the engine and cradle.

As for the thermostat, there are several symptoms to look for. It is very cold here so the fan does not come on for my car, and I am running just under what I would consider normal operating temperature. If it is cold and your fan is staying on the engine may be a little hotter that normal. Watch your temperature gauge. Our engines (I have an 02' Monte SS) temperature should only run at it's peak one or two bars past the 12 noon mark on the gauge. If your gauge looks like it has stopped registering or runs cold all of the time then the thermostat should be replaced. It is a relatively cheap and easy fix if you are mechanically oriented.

Hey, great post! My Monte Carlo SS (2001) does the same thing with the cooling fan running the whole time the car is running and for about 3 minutes after the car is turned off. We live in Chicagoland and it is cold (below freezing) and the blasted fan still continuously runs. Also, the temperature gauge appears to be not working as well. I am going to assume that the gauge isn't working because the car isn't getting warm enough for it to register anything.

I noticed my temperature gauge was not moving as well. Stayed in the cold (140). I am in Kentucky and the weather is confused, one day cold and the other fair. The temp gauge does not budge. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. I bought a thermostat and will have my brother put it on...he doesn't want to..lol I will post back after he replaces it and let everyone know if it worked.

It was the thermostat. Now my car is fixed. Thank you for all your help. I have problems with my 99 Monte so when I can I will post it and hopefully I can have two great cars running.

You have the exact problem I have on my 2000 Pace Car. Did you look to see if the fans were running? I heard mine running but when I looked they were humming as if to be running but they weren't. My temp gage also stoped working. Any suggestions.

I heard and saw the fans running and humming when the car was shut off. Since my brother installed the new thermostat everything runs correct now. The temp gauge moves and the fans will stop running and not hum anymore when the car is shut off.

Well that fixed that!New thermostat gauge works now.The coolant leak is the L plastic pipe that always leaks on the 3800s.

generally if your tempature gauge isn't wokring, you're thermostat is stuck. Easy fix. hope that helps
