seat recliner shaft

When I purchased my truck about 5 months ago, I had the dealership replace the shaft on seat recliner lever one the drivers side. Just recently the pasenger side shaft broke. Does anyone know if there has been a recall on this part? If not what are my options. Do I have to put the same shaft in (which will probably break again), or is there a better option.

Thanks for your help

Phil

Unfortunately this is a common problem with them. Haven't seen a recall on them. It was redesigned awhile back I think though.

Yeah they have been redesigned, so far we have not had to replace a recliner that has been replaced with the updated part number.

Like bowtie says this is a terribly common problem with no recall.

If I went to my local chevy dealer and had them order me a replacement, wold it be the redesigned one or do I have to ask for that one. Are part numbers the same from dealer to dealer, if so what is the part number for the redesigned seat lever.

How much roughly does it cost for the part. would I be able to replace it my self.

When you say redesigned, what is different between the old and the new. did they use a different meterial for the new shaft.

Send me your vin and I can tell you exactly how much they will cost.
Also all the numbers for GM are the same at every dealer. The design change may mean that GM was unhappy with the vendor they were using to build the recliners so they have chosen a new vendor to build the parts for them, which may or may not be better, but 90 percent of the time the product is of better quality.

I can also list the part numbers here, for you, but I will still need your vin to get the seat options.:)

Replacing it is really no big deal. Just takes some patience.

Drivers seat outer 12479966 Sugg retail 60.02
Passenger outer 12479969 Sugg retail 58.84

I checked sales history on these and we averaged selling six of each side a month. This is just to give you an idea of how common this is. But like I said once we sold the newer number we have not had a comeback with the same problem.

What steps are involved in replacing the lever. Do i need to remove the seat, or just the material around the lever.

Is it just the shaft that gets replaced, or is there more to it.

I have some friends who are machineists and i'm thinking of getting them to make me a new shaft, thats assuming the shaft is the only part that has to be replaced.

Its the whole recliner mechanism, held on by 4 bolts. have to pull back both the seat cushion fabric and the seat back fabric. Once you see the part it's pretty self explanatory.
