auto on headlights

I was wondering if anybody knows if there is a way to disable the sensor that automatically turns on your headlights. Its an ok feature, but I like having full control of the operation of my headlights. I know I can turn them on whenever I want, but I can't turn them off(at night).

The problem you are going to run into is that the BCM controls this function. Ill check in the morning and see if it has a dissable option but I seriously doubt it knowing it's considered a safety feature. Even law enforcement veicles have to have "special" permission to dissable some things like DRL lights and such.

I have an '01 Blazer Xtreme and I disabled the auto on headlights and the DRL's. Hey GM, :flipa:

To disable the auto on headlights:

1) go to Radio Shack (or similar electronics store) and buy a pack of 1.2K ohm resistors ($.99 for 5)

2) remove the passenger side speaker grille on the dashboard. That ball on top is the ambient light sensor for the AHL's.

3) unplug the wires going to that sensor.

4) bend the leads of the resistor in a "U" shape and insert them in the holes in that socket you just removed.

5) use electrical tape to keep the resistor from coming out and tuck the wires back in.

6) reinstall the speaker grille.

That's it. Aren't those auto on headlights ANNOYING!?!

i was able to go the route of just pulling the fuse to them. but i had the luxury of not having fogs (they shared a fuse). they annoyed me because they would shine through my painted headlight covers (it was '96).

Hey,

I have an 02 Blazer. You have to do this everytime you start your vehicle for it to work. Just push the dome light override button four times. You will hear a chime. Push three times to turn back to automatic.

hope this helps.

Yea, mine is an '01 and I can also just push the dome override button 4 times (GM has had that feature since '99) but do you really want to do that EVERY TIME you get into the truck? Most likely not. That's why you just take 15 minutes and disable them permenantly. And the good part about it is you can just as easily change it back to stock before you sell the truck so the next owner can worry about it.

I thought you could disable the auto on lights by pushing the ebrake down one click, so the e-brake sensor kicks in but doesnt actually lock up the rear tires. It only works turing the day though. If you turn your Jimmy/Blazer on, the headlights will come on. Pushing the ebrake down a bit will only turn the lights off during the light of day. But I'll give that dome over ride button thing a try ;)

I have a 99 GMC Jimmy. I'll let you know how it goes :)

I have a '98 and i was wondering if that over ride thing works for a 98 blazer?

Tempsho, you can push the e-brake down one click and that will disable both the DRL's and the AHL's. So even at night, you can still operate the lights when you want to instead of them being on automatic. BUT, the big bright red E-BRAKE dummy light will be lit up on your dash all the time and that can get annoying, real quick, especially at night. Which is why I only did that for a day or so.

Pirate, no the Dome Override trick only works on '99 and up S's. When I bought my '01 Blazer, I still had my '98 S-10 for a bit and I tried it on the S-10 and it didn't work. Though, when my friend had to rent a truck one day, he rented a '99 Silverado, and it worked! So, they added that feature in '99.

I tried the e-brake thing before and it only works at night, when the car is in park. I have tried it at night and it does not effect the regular night time driving lights. I talked to the guy at the chevy place and he said there was no real way to change the sensors effects unless you fooled around with the actually sensor itselft or unplugged the fuise!

hey chevyxtreme, i want to try the way you said, but i was wondering...after you remove the wires from the sensor what do you do?

Well with my '98 S-10, I couldn't push in the Dome Override button to disable the DRL's and AHL's like you can in a '99 and up, but I could push in the E-BRAKE one click and that would disable BOTH of them....even at night and in any gear. I would have NO daytime running lights and I could turn the lights on or off anytime I wanted even at night. BUT, I would have to look at the E-BRAKE dummy light all the time, so I stopped doing the E-BRAKE thing and just disconnected them permanantly the right way. This trick even still works in my '01 Blazer so i don't know why it doesn't work for you. The addition of the Dome Override trick to my Blazer was nice, until I realized I had to do it every time I started the truck. So again, I had to disable these annoying features permenantly.

Pirate, for my '01 Blazer, I put a 2.2K Ohm resistor in place of the sensor. That makes the system think it's always light out so it never turns on the lights. But the '98 S-10 I had required a 1.2K Ohm resistor. Being that you have a '98, you probably require a 1.2K Ohm resistor, also.

Just go to Radio Shack and buy a pack of 1.2K Ohm resistors (pack of 5 for $0.99) and unplug the sensor and bend the resistor wires in a "U" shape and insert them into the end of the wiring. Use electrical tape to hold the resistor in place and tuck the wires back in and replace the speaker grille.

That's all you need to do. Takes all but 5 mins. Good luck.

i have a 1999 blazer ls (3 button 4x4 with 4.3L)
i did the 2.2K resistor and it first i thought it worked UNTIL i put it in any gear besides park

with the light switch in OFF position and engine running and in park the light switch works correctly in all modes but if i have light switch in off position and i put in any gear besides park the headlights come on but in HALF Brightness
If i then put the selector switch to headlights on position then they goto full brightness (im not talking about the high beams)
