My new exhuast makes noise...CraniumDesigns 12-21-2002, 03:53 PM I just got my 5zigen fireball catback installed. It's about a year old. Works fine, but after about 20 minutes of driving, especially in colder weather, it makes kinda popping/scraping noises when i turn or go over large bumps. Is it my hangers? All my connections are tight. Help! civickiller 12-21-2002, 04:15 PM maybe your exhaust is scraping on the speed bump CraniumDesigns 12-21-2002, 05:43 PM nope, it's when i turn too. plus i'm not lowered so it's the same as having a stock exhaust. it's not hittin in the rear, it's in the middle. b16a3sol 12-21-2002, 06:06 PM why not drive in a circle, while someone else watches the car to see if there is anything hitting the ground. are you sure that its the exhaust making the noise, and not something else? Belldandy 12-21-2002, 07:11 PM If it scrapes in the middle readjust your hangers. If it's hittine your chassis of the car or you gas tank readjust your hangers. By readjusting bend the hangers until it fits right. CivicSiRacer 12-21-2002, 11:48 PM Could be something else too. How many miles on your car? Could be CV joints clicking/scraping. Could be tires rubbing against something. kicker1_solo 12-22-2002, 12:25 AM I don't think it's the exhaust that's doin' it, like SIRacer said, could be CV joints or something else. CraniumDesigns 12-22-2002, 04:01 AM no. it's happening right where the exhuast is, along the middle tubing, about 2 feet behind the cat. plus i installed it 2 days ago, and that is exactly when it started making the noise. it seems to get worse when it is cold out. civickiller 12-22-2002, 05:13 AM go over a speed bump, then stop right when you hear that noise, then get out and look under your car and see whats going on CraniumDesigns 12-22-2002, 05:18 AM i told you. it happens more than on bumps, and it doesn't always happen on bumps. it's mostly on turning, and moreso in cold weather. sparq 12-22-2002, 11:36 AM Sounds like the cat - not your exhaust. Did you check the heat sheild on the catalytic converter??? CraniumDesigns 12-22-2002, 01:17 PM it's the same cat i've always used. i am going to take it by a muffler shop that my friend owns and ask him to look at it. sparq 12-22-2002, 04:46 PM LMFAO, it doesnt matter if its the same cat youve always used... cats DO NOT last forever, they need to be replaced from time to time... and it is possible that if gone unchecked the heat sheild can come loose and cause rattles. CraniumDesigns 12-22-2002, 05:01 PM but isn't it quite unusual that it would happen EXACTLY when i put in my new exhaust? BTW sparq, you're a damn negative person. i know shit about exhausts obviously. don't treat me like an idiot, just cuz you know more. either be a help, or shut up. kicker1_solo 12-22-2002, 05:08 PM Originally posted by CraniumDesigns BTW sparq, you're a damn negative person. i know shit about exhausts obviously. don't treat me like an idiot, just cuz you know more. either be a help, or shut up. If you've been around here as long as we have you'd understand. We've seen so many idiots roll through here asking stuff and then they call us idiots and then a week later they find out that what we suggested was right. Happens all the time, so just chill guy. And it looks like he is helping, he's giving his input on what he thinks it is and why. Now play nice children. sparq 12-22-2002, 05:25 PM Dude if you dont want advice, then dont friggen ask for help! How was any of what I said negative? You said its the same cat - I said they do not last forever. Im sorry if you expected your car to last 1,000,000 miles without replacing anything. Shit breaks, bolts loosen - things fall off. It happens... CraniumDesigns 12-23-2002, 05:13 AM yeah, he can help, but he doesn't need to be a smart ass about it. the sound is not coming from my cat. it's coming from the joint between the pipe hooked up to the cat and the midpipe. if it was the cat the sound would be coming from it, and it's hard to imagine that it would happen to something i've always had on the car right when i installed something new. i would figure it would be the new item, which it is. civickiller 12-23-2002, 01:23 PM so its in between the pipes, so you found it. probably lose not tight enough MyFirst4G 01-01-2003, 02:17 PM go to a muffler shop and have them put new piping in after the cat to the exhaust..... wheel1856 01-01-2003, 07:26 PM I had a similar issue with my exhaust but between the manifold and the cat, turns out it was a loose heat shield where part of the seam popped. I actually fixed it in about 5 minutes with some pliers and a strap clamp. Plasmex 01-07-2003, 03:07 AM yeah i was gonna suggest the heat shield was loose? CraniumDesigns 01-07-2003, 03:49 AM What does the heatshield look like? CraniumDesigns 01-09-2003, 12:44 PM I found that it only makes the noise when I turn to the right and not the left. Obviously when I turn right the weight is going left, so it's rubbing on the left side or something. Any ideas? wheel1856 01-09-2003, 01:13 PM best thing you can do... get a jack, get up under there, start jiggling your exhaust around to find out what's loose. Your heat shield almost looks like another piece of pipe around certain parts of the exhaust, up front under the seats closer to the motor. All it takes is something to be just a tad loose, the right RPM's, (or in your case a weight shift when you turn) and noises happen. Just climb under there and see what's wrong, find out whats loose, find a way to tighten it. Take ya 10 minutes. good luck -wheel vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
