I would say you need to crawl under the truck and check out your 4 wheel drive shifter linkage. You don't say whether you have a 4 speed, 5 speed, or automatic transmission. I just got done doing a clutch job on my '88 F-150 with a 5 speed transmission. On the 5 speed, the 4 wheel shifter linkage bolts to the side of the transmission, I assume the four speed manual and automatic would be similiar. Bottom line, You just need to check out the linkage. I assume you have a very loose or missing bolt(s).
