bypassing air on 97 grand am

have a 97 grand am with a 4cyl. how can i bypass the air or can i? need help ASAP please!!!

There is neither a factory belt listed w/o air, nor an aftermarket a/c compressor bypass pulley listed for your car/engine combo. Looking at the belt routing schematic, is is not possible to just bypass the compressor either, so it looks like you're SOL, sorry for the bad news.

You can try measuring the distance around the pulleys with a piece of string bypassing the compressor. This will also allow you to see if the compressor needs to be removed to avoid the belt hitting the pulley. Go to the parts store with the measurement in millimeters, plus the width of the belt, they should be able to look one up for you. Good luck.

I believe this is not valid advice. :nono: You may not be able to just bypass the AC pulley on this vehicle due to the way it is routed. Unless you know for sure that this can be done, please don't state it as fact.

Is the compressor locked up or is the pulley locked up? If it's just the compressor, unplug the clutch and use the factory belt size. Richtazz may be right about it not being possible to bypass it. I couldn't find a diagram online, sounds like he has one.

Reread my post. The string gives you the information you need, including if it will hit the pulley. And I have done it before, just not with a quad.

Looking at a diagram at work today (the photo turned into lineart style diagram), the belt will hit the stock tensioner pulley if not routed around the A/C compressor. You may be able to find a smaller pulley that will allow it to work.
