2000 Pontiac Grand AM - Air Pump

Hey folks!

I have 2000 Pontiac Grand AM V6 3.4 liter. The check engine light came on and when I used the computer to see whats the problem, it gave me code PO412 which is air pump. The light turned off, but when I turned my car back ON, the light came again. My question is, does anybody know where the air pump is located in 2000 Pontiac Grand AM ?

P.S. When I hit the gas, the RPM goes al the way up and looks like it wont change the gear. The car is really lazy and I hope the air pump is the problem to fix this ?

Location- Right front of the engine compartment near the coolant reservoir. Has two ~1.5" rubber hoses and a two pin electrical connector.

It's probably not the cause of the drivability problem. The AIR pump delivers fresh air into the exhaust to help complete the burning of the fuel in the catalytic converter.

J-Ri, you're right and I forgot that portion ....

I too doubt that is your troubles.

The secondary air pump only runs for aprox 1 minute at start up only.
This is also only on certain 1999-2000 models.

All it does it pump oxygen into the exhaust manifold to raise the O2 levels while lowering HC and CO of the exhaust. Basicly a cheater to pass emissions in those states that mandate such things have low emissions- ie California.

Also the solenoid only works with outside temp between 50-176 deg F, then the valve/solenoid closes.

As J-Ri stated theirs a few vacum lines, especialy the main line on the intake. The best way to diagnose this would be with the proper scan tool.

Before you change a part, clean your MAF sensor. A dirty MAF sensor makes the Grand am act like it has a bad transmission and engine. You would be surprised how many of the Grand Am problems are just something needing cleaning or a wire that is failing. Then use a scantool to look up error codes. The air pump usually throws a P0410. There are plastic vacuum lines on the engine and the rubber connectors rot right out over time and especially if any kind of fluid got on them- like if you had a coolant leak. However I know this is from 2007 and you probably figured out your problem/ don't even have the car anymore. Oh well I had two cents.
