Strange idle issue

I noticed over the last few days that my car seems to idle oddly...

Normally my car idles pretty low (around 200) but now it seems that it's jumping between about 900 and 1700... it's pretty much as if I am blipping the throttle, it runs up to 1700 then drops back down and it sounds as if the engine is just going to die (it gets a little rattly) then jumps back up again...

Today I noticed it seemed to be doing it between 1500 and 2500 instead which worried me as it seems very high...

I only drive short stints so it's hard for me to verify if this is something that gets better on it's own as it heats up, but earlier this week I did manage to "fix" it for a while, I revved the engine up past 3k and slowly let my foot off the gas, the needle slowly dropped right back down to 200 and it didn't jump again the whole time I was driving (it was revving oddly immediately before) however I was unable to reproduce the "fix" today so no idea if it really fixed it or what.

I know the proper answer is take it to a mechanic, but I am really short on time and thought I would wing it asking here to see if there are any suggestions... my quick check says it might be loose/bad spark plugs or distributor but I am not very engine savvy so I thought it best to ask.

BTW this is a 92 Civic EX

TIA!

Try this (http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1564019). Should do the trick.

If you still have the problem by today, the first step is to take a look at the panel to see if you have a Check engine light on, and make a tune up, spark plugs, wires (go to a very dark place and start the engine to see if you have lights jumping from the wires to the valve cover, that is a cheap trick to see if the spark is jumping out of the wires) cap and rotor (rather go to oem, they last longer and work perfect) and fuel filter (very important). If still have the problem after all this must do things, reply i know this will help!
