Engine Modifications

I have a 89 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight with a 3800 series LN3 engine. I'm trying to figure out what I can get done to the engine to give it more speed and HP. Right now it's a stock engine with 165Hp. I would like to get it up to anywhere between 250Hp and 300Hp, if possible. Can anyone tell me what type of modifications I can make to the car to accomplish this.

On an engine that old I don't think it will support 300 hp, plus major mods would be required at least a S' charger and some head work and custom computer programming just to touch on some possibiliites, really an impractical undertaking.

I've only found out two things about performance. One, get a performance chip. Advance can order them for you. Two, open her up. Exhaust and Intake. You can get a universal air intake at, again, Advance. Takes less than an hour to put on. The exhaust is a problem. Nobody wants to make headers for a FWD. You can get a bigger pipe and high flow everything else.

I have a 1990 Delta 88 Royal Brougham, I haven't done these things yet. Just checked prices. I'm working on fixing other things at the moment . (such as the trans...) No car this old is going to be easy to add performance to, unless it's one that has been done hundreds of times before and whats the point in that? Good luck with your car.

Or u can swap the top end from a s/c engine and maybe double the hadgasket to lower cr and hope everything holds together, this is how to do it on the cheap but its also the least depndable way.

if you do it that way you will blow a hole threw a piston unless you get a custom 5 or 6 inch pull to run realllly low boost and the only thing that will really doo is probably give you better gas mileage cause it would atomize gas better and if were to do that you would also have to swap in a new computer to compensate for the new amount of gas the engine needs or something retarded like black smoke will billow out of the car and and also you would need the injectors out of the s/c engine maybeeeeee but now that im thinking if you were to do that with a ridiculously big pulley on the blower you might not even need the computer or the injectors i dont know do some research like i have done the past year and im sure there is other stuff you would need but i cant think of them i just woke up :(

or you could just do the really simple get a 89-94 cavalier z24 rip out the 2.8-3.1 drop in the 3.4 and put some intense-racing or zzp internals in it then put a nice 17psi turbo on it and run 11's

btw the superchip for this engine will rip apart the trans i would know ;)

I know you probably really love your Olds, but modding it isn't worth it. Wouldn't you rather just spend the money that you're going to end up putting into it for 20hp on something sportier, newer and still faster? These cars, and most other domestics, aren't really for "modding." Unless, its like a Cavelier, Sunfire, Avenger, Focus, Cobalt, Neon ect....wait, just kidding I hate people that "mod" those types of cars. In all seriousness though, check out your other options, it'll be worth it.

if you hate the people that mod cavaliers you need to check out that will change your outlook i hate the new cavs too but the 89-94 z24 with good 'ole gm 2.8 3.1 turbo 3.4's and now they are swapping turbo 3.5 in to the z's ANNDD the guy that is running a stock 3.5 in his 92 z24 with 17psi boost he is running low 11.3 and by summer 08 he will be in 9s so ya dont put down cavs but kill the new one they should die

and also some ppl like me want to mod these cars, well for the fact i have no car payment and my insurance is 120 a month thats not bad... if i wanted to get a gtp i would be looking at 300+ a month in insurance and a car payment http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=5053896

i will start this project in may so ya fun.. im thinking it will take about a week to do

Its fine if people want to do that, its just not my thing and was merely making a suggestion. And I don't care if a Cav is pulling 2s, I'm still going to hate it. Thats my preference and nothing is going to change that. Good luck with your swap. And I haven't done a thing to my car and it still wastes all of those clunkers.

haha thanks man what kind of car are you driving
oh and its fun blasting by the monte carlo z34 in a N/A 88
they are pushing 210hp at the crank the 88 only 170hp
BUT the 3.4DOHC is a heavy engine and the power band is at a really high rpm just figured i would share that and you dont like the old cavs?

I've got a 94 Olds Eighty-Eight. Dunno why, but its fast as hell. The only thing I did was take the cat off because the old one was clogged and just never had a new one put on. I just think all Cavs are pretty girly. Just not a fan.
