Someone tried to steal my Chrysler minivan and the dealer wants about $2500 or more to repair it. basically all they done was snatched the key cylinder out of the steering column damaging it slightly, the key cylinder fits back into the housing and it turns the dash lights up but won’t start. The wire to the security control module is severed. I cannot see dishing out 3000 grand on something so simple when I can change the steering column.

Can I have a locksmith reprogram the keys?

Thanks, lowside

Doesn't you car insurance cover any of this?

Yes but a replacement steering column is two thousand cheaper and my deductible is one grand. thats why I was asking.

A locksmith can cut a key, only if they have a key to duplicate from. However, caravans have a security system called Sentry Key. This is a key with a chip in it, which must be programmed to the vehicle. Only dodge dealers can cut the key that will properly work with your vehicle.

I replaced the steering column, then I took both security modules and keys to a locksmith and he reprogramed them for about $65 bucks. After this I reinstalled the security module turned the key and the vehicle started right up. Total cost less then $300 hundred compared to the thousands the dealer wanted.
