I have a '98 car battery and it needs to be changed but the dealership wans an arm and a leg for this. Can I change the battery myself?

There should be a procedure for R&R of the battery in either a factory service manual or any of the aftermarket manuals such as Haynes or Chiltons.

Just remember to ALWAYS remove the negative (black) cable first and install it last.

If you take it to an auto place they will change your battery for free. You can watch them then you'll know how to do it yourself. Being that I hate waiting to get service, I normally change it myself in Wal Marts parking lot.
