1/16th scale MPC Petty Charger (Rare Kit)

Here is one I have been working on for a client in New Jersey. He paid big bucks on ebay and won one of the "Holy Grail" Nascar kits to alot of nascar modelers. The MPC 1/16th scale Petty charger. I found a set of Slixx decals to use in place of the old kit sheet.
The body and hood come molded in clear plastic. Of course the request was to paint it in traditional Petty BLue and Rocket Red. The body, hood and all remaining parts were cleaned up and primed. Real petty blue Mixed by Al Mosteller was used. SEMS Stop Light red which is what Petty used is the rocket red followed by dupont chroma clear.

Here are the body pics painted cleared before decals. The white stripe is 1/32 pinstripe tape that I applied before clearcoat.

Tire lettering was carefully painted, and weathered for realism

CHassis was also built, primed, painted and cleared.

And with the body polished and decaled. I also included a 1/24 scale Petty last ride model built by Al Mosteller to show the size of this thing. In case some are wondering, I am doing this car Boxstock. The owner wanted it built exactly out of the box for nostalgic purposes. Believe me if this puppy was mine I would have gone all out on it!! But it has impressive detail out of the box considering its a 30 year old kit.

Looks great!!! This is a really unique build. PPLLLLEEAAASSEEE post progress often. :)
Do you worry at all about the tape eventually pulling away or "lifting" from the body over time?

Magic! Those wheels look superb. Is your client following the WIP, or getting updates? Or will it be a surprise?

Impressive looking already, Dave. I would have liked to see this done in full detail, but even so, it's looking sharp.

I really hate to tell you this, but I've got to ask if you have tried fitting the chassis under the body with the front suspension installed? I built this kit when it was new and there is a very good reason the the 1/16 Buddy Baker #71 K&K Insurance model that came out after this one had larger and flared front fender openings.

The front track is too wide for the body and there will be some pretty severe fit problems. You might want to check it out before you go any farther on the chassis. Maybe shorten the a-frames or move the attach points inboard a little.

Opening up the front wheel openings probably isn't an option at this point but you may want to look into that. Hope that one doesn't have that problem but now is the time to check it out, just in case.

It's fitting that a modeller of your calibre got to build one of these, even if it's not your own. I had aspirations of buying one of these years ago and missed the Baker version by a few days at a dealer over here near London. :banghead:

Anyhow, it looks outstanding already, really very high quality stuff. I'm sure this will be the benchmark biuld for this superb kit. Keep us posted. :)

I really want to dig into a larger scale NASCAR to see what I could come up with....

Just curious, have you tried mounting the body with the front wheels and tires attached yet?

More progress!!

Please remember this is a build for a client that wanted me to stick mainly to the stock essentials of this kit.... Superdetailing was not requested. Believe me it was hard to refrain!!:banghead: :grinyes:
