No reverse on 5spd.

My 95 Altima (altima forums are no good) will not go into reverse. Its not that it won't stick, its like freaking blocked. All the other gears are fine but the reverse is useless. I can push my car backwards in neutral but I'm out of ideas, fluid level is good. Never had symptoms before.

Its not a DSM but I need you guys.:banghead:

Try to put it in reverse with the car off, then push the clutch and crank it up to see if it works.

Sounds like a broken slider.

Basically there are little sliders inside that move the gear cogs around on the shafts depending on which gear you want , my guess is one broke off and is locking up the mechanism to allow the car to be put into reverse.

Once a gear is gone , there is no easy fix. It's rebuild or buy a used one.

It's most likely that the tranny is shot, but not necessarily. On my buddies 5-spd 420a, we pulled the tranny apart to work on some rattling issues and when we put it back together, we fucked up these little copper "bushings" that the gear rails slide into. So I pulled the tranny back apart and put new bushings back it it and the tranny shifted like new. I'm not sure if that's your problem, but I know when we did that with his, the car would simply not go into gear, either running or shut off. So maybe you should try tearing the tranny apart and checking those out, if the altima trannys' have them. IIRC, it was a relatively easy fix, it was just time consuming.

Is it gonna be the same though, i mean it doesn't look or feel like the shifter uses cables. I can't see it right now but I only took the boot off and some panels. If I can get to them should I replace the bushings?

You have to disassemble the transmission to get to the bushings that I was talking about, they're inside the casing.

Don't go randomly buying parts until you are certain what the problem is. Trouble shooting across the internet is difficult enough and now your talking internal transmission diagnosing so we're giving scenarios and ideas of what could be wrong...some crooked places like autozone have a no return policy one some items as well if opened so...

OK, well tomorow I'm either gonna open it up myself or have a cousin of mine do it. This blows man, whats the probability I'll f*ck something up in there.

Nothing if you just remove the housing pieces to 'look' if there is something broken in there , youll see it as most likely little metal shavings all over , little chucks on metal and what not. Do this , if you open it up before removing anything , take a little telescopic magnet stick for like retrieving screws and bolts and poke it around gently inside and see what you come out with.

Also did you check the shift linkage to make sure nothing is getting in the way. It's not likely that is the problem, but it still couldn't hurt to look.
