Nice start. I have this kit in my pile as well. Will you be building Senna or Prost's ride?

Also, I believe those things on the sides are radiator outlets.

Looks good Johnny! I wish I was this good when I was 20! (25 now). Are you going to use white primer over the grey? I highly recommend this because you'll find that the grey primer may slightly darken the white paint. Keep it up!

JohnnyFerrari

thanks zurbert, im not sure if im going to use white primer if i do im going to have to go buy some at my local hobby shop. also i was juts on your site and nice models there excellent :)

Excellent preparation work so far.I would also recommend using some white primer as white paint over grey will darken the white significantly.

the red parts masked and sprayed the first coat, i sprayed the second coat but these are pics of the first coat.. I figured its easyier to masked off the red when its time to spray the white.. It might mess you up the red but i used the tape as a guid line because i dont really have to mask the whole body becuase most of its going to be red so i masked the red and after that i will mask up the red and spray the white.. ( i dont know how to explain it good i hope you get what i mean)

I would have thought spraying the red first would have created all sorts of problems and the possibility of the white looking 'pink' However it looks ok in your pictures.Which red did you use?

JohnnyFerrari
12-01-2007, 02:42 PM
hey steve,

what i did to not creat a "pink" coat is i sprayed a silver after the red then sprayed the white and tunred out really good... the red i used is called "Red" i think by testors and its enamal

Hi Johnny looks good and you have done well with the non bleeding of the red. One comment, your red is not the fluro red and this may cause issues for you with the red decals when the time comes of not matching?

JohnnyFerrari
12-02-2007, 07:00 PM
hey shunter,
what do you mean about the decals? do u mean the back wing decals becuase im not using them i will be spraying the red there..

Johnny

12-02-2007, 08:40 PM
I hate to tell you this but that Red is totally wrong. To properly paint this car you should have painted the entire body and wing end plates white and make it as smooth as possible then paint the red areas with Tamiya Spray TS-36 Flourescent Red. The Marlboro Mclaren Cars were always white and Flourescent Red(Not the red on a pack of Marlboros)

Nice work Johnny. Keep up the good work. Don't take offence at being told you have the wrong shade of red/orange... there are more important things to spend your money on when you are 14 :)

I would have recommended that you use white primer and that you paint the red over a completely white body-work... however, your photographs show that your way works too... bravo!

Good job so far. :)

you might want to wet sand the body with very fine grit sandpaper and/or apply some polishing compound to get rid of that orange peel. In the future you might want to wait longer before masking and doing that 2nd color of paint (enamel takes at least a couple of weeks to fully cure). That way you won't have that dimply effect on the red parts.

JohnnyFerrari
12-05-2007, 02:33 PM
hey davezilla thanks for the advice i will wetsand it :D, but what do you mean orange peel? and do i have to clear coat it first to wetsand? and by the way the red looks crap in the pictures my camara cant pick up what the red acually looks like.

SeanyG

Johnny,

looks great, I am suprised too as I didnt think you would get a good white by spraying over the red. Good effort. If you can try and use some polish on the paint when its completely dry - you should get rid of that 'orange peel' effect and it will improve it 100%.

Dont worry about not using the Fluoro red, this still looks good and is another classic colour scheme in my opinion.

keep it up matey!

Hey,

What is Orange Peel?

SeanyG
12-06-2007, 05:46 PM
Hey,

What is Orange Peel?

Zubski,

We use the term 'Orange Peel' to describe the textured finish you sometimes get after spraying bodywork. There are many reasons for it including, ambient temperatures, damp conditions, poor surface preparation etc.

Ideally when we spray the final top coat on any project wether it be a real car or a model, you want to achieve a smoother finish as possible, almost mirror like is what we aim to achieve.

You can see in Johnny's pics a very slight texture on his finished top coat, with a little polishing this can be removed no problem though.

JohnnyFerrari
12-06-2007, 05:51 PM
thanks seany again i was just about to ask that question myself.. Yea some of its my camara too. But whne i do wetsand and polish it it will be gone.

AHHHH!!!!:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :disappoin :crying:
When i clearcoated the body and let it dry i began to polish it when i was polishing a section of the body it removed a bit of paint that was there, so im like no problem and i began to fill the white in bit by bit to get the exact thickness of the coat but then the white began to turn red ( remeber how i sprayed the red before the white ) i dont know how it tore threw the coat of silver i put over the red but it did and now it looks awful:((( i dont know what to do, im so pissed.. Can anyway give me some ideas? What im thinking is let it dry and put white util the red is gone then let it dry again and sand it then clear coat and polish.

heres a pic of it..

Looks great so far, Johnny. Nice detail on the steering wheel. Make sure you burnish the bare metal foil down against the edges of the undertray. I usually use a Q tip or a toothpick to do this. Then you can cut off the excess with a fresh X-Acto blade.
