I am trying to replace the dimmer switch on my 94 Blazer. I have taken the cover off already. Do I need to drop the steering column to take the metal plate off or do I have to pull the steering wheel?

Wich metal plate are you refering too? if you mean the one that goes under the dash by your feet, you should not have to remove nor should you have to drop the steering column. the dash piece that goes around the headlight and dimmer switch across over the steering wheel and covers your heat and radio controls, should just pop off, if I remember correct its only held in place with small clips, you should then beable to gain clearance to the dimmer switch on the dash piece, just unplug and then pop the switch out of the dash cover that you removed, and install the new one.

If you are refering to the bright light dimmer switch/multi switch "the turn signal arm" then yes you will have to remove the steering wheel and lock plate to gain access to the multi switch wich is atached to the steering column with to star bit screws, also the column cover is attached with star bits and you will need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate remover, and if equiped you will need to disable the airbag.

If this does not help please post more info, with your question.

Thanks for the info. Yes it is the bright light dimmer switch/multi switch that I am talking about. Do you know how to disable the airbag?

Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.

Turn the ignition switch to LOCK, remove the key, then disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the AIR BAG fuse from the fuse block.

Remove the steering column filler panel or knee bolster.

Unplug the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and yellow two way connector at the base of the steering column.

On 1998-99 models, remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the passenger yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.

On 1998-99 models, unplug the yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.

Connect the negative battery cable.

With the AIR BAG fuse removed, the battery cable connected and the ignition in the ON position, the AIR BAG warning lamp will be ON. This is normal and does not indicate a system malfunction.

However, I usually just disconect the battery and I have never had a problem, I just disconnect the battery, and fuse "if i know wich one it is", then you have to to turn the steering wheel a quarter turn and use a standard screw driver to pop the clips in the back of the steering wheel, "you turn the steering wheel to gain access to the clips, then the airbag unit should just pop out then disconnect the electrical plug that goes to the airbag unit. then remove the nut from the center of the steering wheel and use a steering wheel puller to pull the wheel then a lock plate remover to decompress the lock plate and remove the snapring that holds the lock plate in place, remove the lock plate and then you can unscrew the multi switch.

it might sound like alot but its actually pretty easy if you have the two pullers.

Thanks for all the info.

Found out I do not need to pull the steering wheel to replace the dimmer switch. The switch is located on the left hand side of the column just below where it mounts to the dash. Now if I had to replace the Multifunction Switch then I would.

Turned out that the switch was good but both low beams had burnt out at the sametime. The headlights aren't even a year old. Guess need to check grounding and wiring for bare wire.

Thanks again.
