Oil pan plug problem

I have a 99 Beetle, 2.0. The oil pan plug just turns. The threads do not catch and will not back out. I was told at the local oil change place that this is typical with aluminum pans. If I can get the plug out, is there a oversize plug that can be used or do I have to replace the pan with new?
Thanks for any help!

This is not unusual and the result of overtightening - you will need to somehow apply a pulling force to the sump plug as you try to unscrew it. Once out it can be rethreaded and an oversize plug fitted. Most garages should be familiar with this problem and carry oversize plugs and taps to rethread. Sometimes it is easier to remove the sump completely so as to prevent small slivers of aluminium from the re-threading contaminating the oil whilst other will just put grease on the tap to stop this problem.
Do a Google search and you'll find plenty of examples/fixes.
