A few suggestions: bad gas, bad alternator, distributer rotor/cap, plug wires, were the new plugs properly gapped, was the coil wire replaced correctly. I would check these items first. Of course, check for bad gas as a last resort.

checked the alt it works fine. had a bad battery put in a new one with 640cca is this battery to small everything is electric on it.
it was running fine after the the plugs were changed but it seemed as if you had to pump the gas pedal to start it and you shouldn't have to right it is FI.
its sitting at my sons 50 miles away right now but i will be going down there tomorrow and i will check the rotor wires.
my son said it turns over fine but won't start and he smells gas from the engine.

Make sure the new battery is fully charged. A weak battery, even when it will turn the engine over good, will cause a no start problem. I would try to jump it and see if it starts. If not, then start with checking the fuel pressure with a pressure gauge.

Keep in mind that '97's are notorious for bad ignition switches.
