My father inlaw has had this problem for a few weeks now. The car, when it sits overnight, will start on the first turn-over. But if he goes to work, and then leaves for lunch, the starter wont even engage. Everything else electrical works, including the cluster. So he has to fidget with the shifter and the steering wheel, and after 10 minutes it still wont start....only when it wants to. But again, when it sits overnight, it starts right away. When its running, it runs perfect. No other electrical problems to speak of. I recall having this problem with my 96 Aurora, which is close to the same set-up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I had a similar problem on my 2000 STS, and it was a bad ignition switch. Check the computer codes for any errors.

Consider also a bad starter solenoid.

True, you don't hear of many problems with Northstar starters, but it's a possibility. If checking the computer codes doesn't provide more clues to the problem, then I would suspect the starter as well!

Will do, thanks for the replys. Either of you wouldnt have the process to get into the computer off hand would you? Or know of a place to get the directions? Also, whats the best way to check for a bad solenoid? Thanks again.

There is a specific procedure to access the diagnostics about which you can learn more here... http://www.caddyinfo.com/readingcodes.html .

To test the starter and solenoid you'll need to verify that the solenoid is receiving voltage when the key is in the START position. Are you hearing a click from the solenoid when the key goes to the START position ?

Also, in case you didn't know the starter is under the intake manifold, so it might be hard to hear the solenoid clicking. The intake isn't too hard to remove to change out the starter if you have to, so don't worry! :)
