They say not to use Carb or Brake cleaner. I think they make a special cleaner, not sure. What you need to be concerned about is the small passage ways, which you can clean with a drill bit (by hand) and a screw driver and a wire brush on the other parts.

After you remove the EGR valve, check to see if the pintle (little plug valve) is partially open, if so, gently push it full open with a pencil then quickly pull the pencil back so the inner spring can push the pintle back out. Sometimes this has to be done several times because the pintle stem can have a thin layer of carbon. If it's stuck fully open then use compressed air on the EGR inlet port to blow the pentle shut then use the pencil trick until it shuts by itself easily. Check with your auto parts store for a screened EGR valve gasket or buy a stainless faucet screen and glue to a regular gasket over the inlet port hole (thanks Jim of Phoenix) to keep loose chunks of carbon from holding the pintle open.
