97 lumina with 3.1 transmission slipps only pulls in first gear

i have replaced the modulator valve it helped nothing i have already bought a new tranny filter kit gonna try that next the tranny fluid looks pretty nasty if that doesnt work got any ideas that can save a poor guy some money without a crooked garage ripping him off? lol please help if you can :banghead:

you didn't mention if it only goes into first, won't shift to second, and has no reverse, if that's the case, the problem i had was what they call a stovepipe in the transmission,it links up second gear plates with the reverse drum, mine had sheared teeth on 1 end, but sadly, if that's the case, it means to take out tranny to repair
