96 Blazer wont start

OK, a little background first, I found and fixed an electrical short, got a new battery and had the alt tested, everything is ok there. After finding the short it ran for a few days with no problem, then I went to the store, parked the car, shut it off and took the key OUT, but the truck tried to start it self, but did not fully crank over. After that I restarted the engine and when I got home, same thing happened, after shutting off the car, it tried to start itself, and then tried again, this time it screeched, like when you try to start a car that is already running, now the truck is completely dead and wont crank over at all, when you open the door the lights work, the horn works and so do the headlights.

I Spoke to a mechanic and he said it was the ignition switch, but it would be 2 hours labor because they have to disarm the airbag. Does this sound right? Can I disarm the airbag and replace the ignition switch if that is the problem? Thanks for any help.

I think you can just disconnect the pos side of the batt and take the airbag out yourself I had to do something like that and all I did was disconnect batt and take the steering wheel off matte of fact it was on my old probe gt new steering column

Is there a remote starter or anti theft system on the vehicle?

Yes there is an alarm on the truck, but that hasn't worked in very long time.

Thanks Chris, I did see that info already, but wasn't sure if it applies since its a 97 tutorial.

I also wanted to make sure the ignition switch seemed to be the problem?

The alarm system may have the ability to disable the starter. If it does, a short circuit in the alarm module may be what's activating the starter. Try totally removing the alarm system and see if your problem goes away.

Old master,

I finally got a chance to look at this, I removed the alarm control box by unplugging it under the dash, but it still wont start, is there anything else I need to do besides removing the control unit? thanks.

The wiring for the alarm system usually requires that some of the vehicle wires be cut. Now that you've unpluged the the control box, it leaves open circuits which is why I suggested removeing the system. Check the alarm wiring and look for splices, and put the original vehicle wiring back together. Solder is the best way, butt connectors have no place on a vehicle.
