1991 S10 2.8L Manual 2WD Valve Lash Adjustment Problem

I spent hours trying to adjust the valves in my truck, i did the "find TDC and set it to zero lash and tighten one more turn, then rotate the crank one more time and do it to the other ones" it didnt work and i bent 2 rods doing so. the truck didnt even want to start. then i set the all the valves to zero lash and it started but ran very poorly, anyone know what im doing wrong? thanks

If you done it by the good book it should have been right and should work.
You missed on one or two cylinders or a lifter was collasped or a valve is stuck.
But another way to do it is to adjust the valves one cylinder at a time by rotating engine when the opposite firing cylinder is at TDC compression stroke.
Or you can start engine and adjust them with engine running.
Very messie job that way.:grinyes:

hey thanks for the reply. I think i might have solved it...i was told i dont have enough oil in the engine for the hydraulic lifters work properly.
i tryed adjusting them with the truck running but all i did was get oil everywhere and about choked myself to death on fumes, ha!
but this time i think ill try the one by one approach that you refered to me, any other thoughts? thanks!

oh yea, this truck ran perfectly before i changed the intake manifold gasket (obviously i had to take out the pushrods to do that) thats why im in this pickle, ha!

Yes the one at a time works good.
Just make sure you are not tightening down a collapsed lifter.
Push down a little on rocker arm and you should feel the lifter give a little.
If it is rock solid better check for a collapsed lifter.
