WIP: Ferrari 312 F1 1969 MFH 1/20

Hello to everybody,
Having finished the 512S Coda Longa, the customer came to get it and gave me a new kit to build.....
A F1, yes but one belonging of the good times of RocknRoll....
A Ferrari 312 F1 From 1969. Driver: the great Chris Amon at Monaco.....
What a nice kit, as usual should I say, coming from Model Factory Hiro.
OK here is a small start:
The support for the oil cooler is made from 3 photoetched parts, they use to be assembled on over each other, to make the piece thicker.
I decided to solder them together, so that the 3 borders would not see.
I filed, cleaned averything and I should say that you dont see that this is made from 3 pieces:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h107/Jamme_2006/Wip312f10001.jpg

Part is painted in Mat Black from Modelmaster acryl paint.
Needs a drybrush, not yet done:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h107/Jamme_2006/Wip312f10002.jpg

These are the parts for the gearbox:
All white metal:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h107/Jamme_2006/Wip312f10003.jpg

Parts are assembled, cleaned, primed.
I put some bolts, a pièce of plasticard over the small box receiving the gear transmission from the cockpit:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h107/Jamme_2006/Wip312f10004.jpg

Gearbox is now painted using Modelmaster Alu metalizer, slightly polished with a soft cloth when dry (of course.......)
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h107/Jamme_2006/Wip312f10005.jpg

Bolts wher picked up in Gun metal from the same brand.
A light wash was made (as I usually do....)
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h107/Jamme_2006/Wip312f10006.jpg

That's all for tonight.
Thank you for looking.
Hope you will like this WIP.
I'm waiting, as usual, for your comments, questions and critics.

Cheers,

Jamme

Jamme,

excellent start, really like your wash on the gearbox - looks very natural. The nuts and bolts make it look even better too.

Im hooked to another of your threads!

Fantastic job JM. May you spend few words explaining your cleaning method/tools? For my experience white metal parts (also hiro's) are quite rough, your are neat.

Hello Gionc.
Concerning the White Metal parts, you are quite right....they are quite rough.....Even Hiro!
Here is my method.....I don't say this is the best or only one, but I don't know of another.
I start removing rest of the injection carrots, using files and X-Acto blade 11.
After that i sand everything with 240 Sandpaper. I use really small pieces to sand in the corners and between ribs. Do the same with 600 paper. Then use a metallic (not the copper one) brush in my proxxon. If everything is OK, then Primer, color, and wash. otherwise.......240, and so on...
Hope this explanation will help you?

There's only one thing how do you prevent your file to clog up after couple minutes of work? Since white metal is so softer it's extremly hard to clean the files afterwards. Do you have any special files or how do you clean them?

Jamme
11-01-2007, 04:48 AM
Hello,
I don't use the file so much, only to remove the biggest problems.
A good way to clean your files is to use a spark plug brush, it's made from hard Iron, and work's not bad.
Anyway, it won't remover all the white metal that's on your file.
That's why I use mostly sandpaper, when it's clogged, you throw it away, and use a new piece, and it's really cheap!

Ah, an update.

Nice progress, the metal shadows/highlights look well. Nice PE logo on the rocker cover too. Quite an upright V12... no wonder they developed the flat 12 a few years later.

This is looking very nice indeed.
And I too am impressed by the look of the engine. How did you get it look so dirty ? What kind of wash did you use ?

I'm really curious as I have an engine that is looking way too clean for one of my builds, and I want to "schmutz-it-up", so to speak...

Hi Jamme,

Very nice work overall but I'd really like to know how you made you're washes over tTestor's Metaliser. From my experience they are very fragile paints, do you use a "Barrier coat" before laying the wash. And what do you use as a wash. The effect is very good on your engine.

Thanks

Those metaliser's I used here are from Gunze. They are the new "Super Metalic". They looks like Alclad II.
The wash is made from artist Oil paint from Windsor & Newton. The oil paint is diluted in Zippo Fuel for lighter.
The dilution is at your convenance; you want a light wash many fuel; heavy wash less fuel.
Why Zippo.......
Because diluted with lighter fuel (is has not to be Zippo brand...) the oil paint dries mat instead semi gloss when diluted with turpentine.
I had the same results with metaliser's than with Gunze.
I don't use a "barrier coat"

Thank you for looking.

That's so funny. I paint a lot of Historical figures in Oils and Zippo is my thinner of choice for that same reason but I never would have thought to us it on metaliser's. We can't get the Gunze laquers easilly her in Canada, did you say you tried it on Alclad II ?

Jamme

Hello,
No I said it's like Alclad II.
I tried the chrome from "Mr Color Super Metallic".
the effect is juste the same.
You will see it soon, because I used it on somme pieces of this car.
Pictures latter.

But it's really simple to made, you have to make a sort of punch & die.
