Headlight won't go out.

Hi. New to the forum (as a poster, anyway). 1996 G20. Headlight switch and headlights work fine EXCEPT the driver side headlight sometimes won't go out until I disconnect the battery cable. This possessed headlight also comes on at will -- even when the car is sitting in the garage! Peeled the steering column and sprayed some electrical contact cleaner into the switch. Worked for a while but problem "came back." Must be something else. I heard about "...a bad spring in a headlight relay." Make sense? Comments appreciated. Thanks.

I've not heard of a bad spring in the relay, but I didn't have a 96. Sounds to me like you've got a short. You might need to pull all the wiring and re-run it.

Thanks for the reply. Since my original post, a G20 fan looked at my car's wiring diagram and found that the car has no headlight relays, just a headlight fuse. So, an electrical short (hope not) or a bad headlight switch on the steering column seem to be the only two solutions. I ordered the switch and will see if that solves the problem. I'll post back with results.

Well, I ordered and inslalled a new headlight/turnsignal switch on the steering column and all has been well for the past three weeks or so. The car is not mine, and doesn't get driven very often, but that didn't stop the one headlight from simply turning itself on...in the garage...in the middle of the night. Strange. Anyway, so far so good. Part: $70 counting shipping. Installation time: 20 minutes.
