Me and my wife just baught a 1999 ford contour, pushing 119k miles, was a last minute buy due to last car litterally taking a crap....

So the issue is, minute we drove away, the O/D OFF light kept flashing on and off, then at the first red light, the car took forever to get up to speed, like it was stuck in 3rd or 4th gear... then it went away for a day or two, now its back not shifting at all from a dead stop, putting it into 1st or 2nd gear doesnt help, check engine light is on, appears to be burning gas like mad...and again appears stuck in 3rd gear, never shifts at all, befor all this when it was shifting, it shifted hard.... its a automatic btw....any ideas?

befor we got it, it was in a shop getting breaks rotated and tranny flushed...not sure why they flushed it but...i suspect this may have had something to do with it? btw, the OD light flashes on and off periodicly, not sure why....

check contour.org I havent been there in a while, but back in the earlier times they helped me out with my SVT..

Pull the codes and we can go from there.

Find another transmission,most transmission shops will not touch that transmission

How about this one, my GF's SE V6 has an auto tranny and lunges when it shifts between the 1st-3rd gears. She jsut got her fluid changed but not the filter. Any recommendations?

bolsen, there are sensors inside the transmission for each gear. It is possible one or more of the sensors are bad. There is also the possiblity that the valve body in the transmission has blown its gasket. This is a common problem, most likely the valve body. The O/D OFF light that goes on and off is the check engine light of the transmission, yes it does serve more than 1 perpose. it is also the light that comes on when you dont want it in O/D for some reason and you push the button on the shifter.

Burning gas, is the check engine light on? This could also be caused by the transmission failure you are having. Take it to a good transmission shop and have them check the codes on the scanner for the transmission. If the sensors are bad all it is, is taking the pan off and they are right there for each gear. If its the valve body it is the same thing. Valve body will cost less.

My 99 contour has seen its mishaps as these people can relate but I had this problem as well and it was the valve body. My contour has 155,000 miles on it and still runs great. 2.5 V6

hi, i have a 98 contour gl model with a bad transmission, i think? anyways, from a dead stop, ill accelerate from 1st and car will keep revving till it hard shifts into what sounds like 3rd then if im lucky it will get to 4th but never o/d. i did get an error code pulled today saying that its a factory control ignition failure or misfire??? code: p1380. there were no signs of the transmission failing ever, it just happened out of nowhere. does anyone here know of this exact problem or will changing the shift position sensor help this? any reply would be super appreciated :)
