92 Rodeo loosing power at 3000 rpms

Hi I have a 92 rodeo w/ manual transmission and about 200,000 miles.

Truck runs perfect except for the following, not sure if it is at all related:

Looses power right at 3000 rpms, slows down while driving up hill, impossible to overtake and pass someone on highway. Sometimes while starting out up hill it will really start to buck back and forth in 2nd as im approaching 3000rpm

The guy I bought the truck from insists it is a bad throw-out bearing, which there is a "wurring" sound while the clutch is out and goes away when you press it.

The transmission also grinds while downshifting into 2nd gear, unless truck is slowed to below 15-18 mph. This grinding seems completely speed related, not rpm related.

So my question is this: Is the loss of power related to the "wurring" from the clutch or to the trouble downshifiting? Both? Where do I start?

When is the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

If you or the previous owner haven't changed it, that is where I would start.

The loss of power is not related to the noise you are hearing from the clutch.

Good luck,
Dale

thx for your reply...

not sure when the fuel filter has last been replaced. I bought the truck from a friend a couple of weeks ago and all the service records for the last 100,000 miles are in the truck.

I'll go through those and report back.

oh and you do have a bad throw out but it doesnt matter because you either need a clutch or a new tranny soon, so get ready for that. Drive it until you can't take it anymore because if you don't do yourself, it will be very expensive. Most likely clutch.

ok, went through the service records. About 34,000 miles ago a previous owner brought it in because it wouldn't start.

They replaced:
spark plugs
dist cap
dist rotor
spark plug wires
fuel filter
fuel pump

20 miles before that it was brought it for:

complete clutch assembly
new pressure plate
new disc clutch
new T/O bearing
new piolet bushing
fixed and surfaced broken flywheel
RECOMMENDED changing transmission fluid.

Also, last repair before that was another clutch at 104,000mi

John, how do I find and unplug the egr?

The classic symptoms of a clogged fuel filter, but I may be wrong.

"Waiting that long (50,000 miles) to change the filter is asking for trouble, especially if you drive on gravel or dirt roads, buy the cheapest gas you can find from "cut-rate" stations, use gas with alcohol in it, or your vehicle is more than six or seven years old and may have rust in the tank."

If it were me, I'd change the fuel filter just to be sure. Its cheap, easy to do and may solve your problem.

Good luck,
Dale

got it... ...it was a pinched tailpipe. Still a little sluggish getting up to freeway speeds on uphill ramps, but about what I'd expect with 200,000 miles.

Who knows how long it was driven like this, id say a few thousand miles; could it have been causing other damage? is there anything I should check?

I'm going to replace all the plugs and do a couple quick oil changes, as well as replace the fuel filter...
