I have a 4cly 93 camry xle. When I turn on the cruise control, the "green" cruise light comes on, on the instrument panel. The cruise does not have to be engaged, just turned on (waiting to be engaged), for the light to come on and stay on. It goes out only after turning cruise off. Based on all the other cars I've owned, I don't think this is correct. Usually the "cruise" light comes on only after engaging the cruise control. This is the first Toyota that I have ever owned so just want to ensure that my problem is not normal operating procedure. Anyone know what (relay, switch??) controls this light? Other than that, the cruise control works great.

My family is on its 5th camry/camry based lexus. All of them have the light turn on right when the cruise button is pressed to turn it on (not engaged yet).
Your conditions are normal.

oh, and congrats on your first yota
hopefully, you won't be dissapointed

This is normal operating procedure for Toyota vehicles. It means the cruise control circuit is powered on and waiting to be engaged (as you put it) by using the same stalk you used to power up the system. This is the stalk with the power on/off button on the right hand side of the steering column, behind the wiper controls. Pull the stalk downward to "set/coast" and upward to "resume/accelerate". These written instructions may have worn off the end of your stalk through the years. The system will also power itself off when the engine is shut off using the igniton key. Think of the way this cruise control system works as an added safety feature, making it more difficult to accidently engage the set speed. If you have an owner's manual to this vehicle you may want to read the cruise control section for additional information.
