Hi all again- My '91 Pathy had a half tank of gas in it when I bought it, so I thought that was cool. Well, I ran it down to a quarter tank and then the girlfriend took it out and then told me that it stalled on her and died. She got it re-started and drove it the rest of the way home (about 2 blocks). I then pulled a plug and it looked fine and pulled the distributor cap off and that seemed ok. So I basically couldnt figure out what was going on because it ran fine when I bought it. So I grabbed the gas can and put about 3 gallons in and it fired after 2 tries. It runs just fine again. So now I know that the fuel guage is off. If I get to a quarter tank I am out of gas or close. My problem: Is there a relay or fuse that could be the problem. Or is there a sending unit to the gas tank that I could get to and replace? Maybe I need a new guage. Can anyone help?

is your temp gauge flaky also? Both run off the same voltage regulator and are common enough to go bad although usually your gauge goes right to empty when the regulator warms up (20 or so minutes) when the regulator goes.

Sounds like you just need to replace the sending unit inside the fuel tank.

I agree with flyguy, it does sound like the sending unit and I was going to add that as the most probable of the two problems in my post....just got side tracked I guess.

Hi and thanks all for the info. The temp gauge seems ok and the fuel gauge goes down to empty when the vehicle is shut off. Can I get to the sending unit from underneath?

Sorry to tell you , but you need to drop the tank.

Oh no you don't! Pull up the carpet in the cargo area at the rear. There is a round hatch in the floor to allow access to the fuel pump and sending units.

thanks for the info 88 i do appreciate it very much so you are saying there is a hatch in the cargo area to just open up and there is a sending unit from there going to the gas tank? i can just pull it out and replace it ?
