1999 Olds Eighty Eight

Hello,
Does anyone know if there is a way to check codes on my 1999 year Olds Eighty Eight without a code scanner? If its not possible can anyone recommend an inexpensive scanner for it? Reason I ask is because my engine hydrolocked 6 months ago but I was able to replace the bad intake that melted and leaked coolant into the engine. I also replaced all the plugs, wires, water pump, thermostat, and serpentine belt as well. Car seems to run fine but I get popping and a bog if I rev the enging between 3000 and 3500 rpm. I also for some reason get a squeal but it only occurs when the engine hits over 200 degrees which seems odd because it doesnt squeal till it gets to temp. I would like to pull codes even though I dont have a check engine light because Im thinking the O2 sensor may have gone bad when the engine originally hydrolocked. Would a bad O2 sensor be the cause for the squeal because im at a loss why it only does it above 200 degrees because if the day is cool enough and it drops below 200 degrees the squeal goes away. I also thought possibly the squeal could be coming from one of the electric fans but no dice. Also I have sprayed the serpentine belt with water and the squeal doesnt change so I figure thats not it either.

A code reader at minimum is required, in most states Autozone will do this, but do not be talked into buying related parts, codes do not mean parts should just be replaced. The squeal sounds like a possible vacuum leak especially at the 2 seals required in the pcv cavity under the map sensor. Or it is a belt noise, can't really tell from here. Does this popping occur in neutral?

I just discovered the popping today while revving it in park. I never noticed it while driving till today when I was revving it in park. As for the squeal I really dont think its the belt because I sprayed the belt with water from the hose while the engine was running which I heard was a good method for checking the belt and the squeal never changed. I was thinking maybe the PCV seal because the new intake was slightly different than the old one in this one area. Would the PCV squeal though only above 200 degrees? This is one thing that it does and hasnt changed in the 6 months I have been driving it and if the temp drops below 200 degrees the squeal goes away.

thanks

You cannot rev it too high in N or P, there is a rpm limiter safegard built into the pcm, normal.

I know about rev limiters but between 3000 to 3500 rpm seems a little low for a rev limiter and it seems fine above that rpm so I doubt its the rev limiter kicking in.

I just checked the map sensor seal and it was a bit frayed and old. The PCV seal is brand new when I changed the intake and it looks fine. Im wondering if the popping and bogging is in fact the map seal but I guess I need a new map sensor seal. I found the part number being 16194007 but seems like a dealer only item. Might try GMparts direct. I hope this solves my problems.

autozone or some part stores do free code checks...
