Hey all. I got an email asking for some help. I think this guys problem is the starter. It sounds like all the symptoms I had. But what I dont know is, whats the other stuff he is talking about? Here is the email:

I am having intermitant starting problems with my 93.5 G20. The symptoms
are when the clutch is depressed and the key is turned, the car does not
start (no noise what so ever). This problem just started about 6 days ago
(Sept 14, 2001) and I have been push starting my car to bypass the starter
to get the car started when I really need to use the car. However, I can't
be doing this forever. The battery has been replaced 4 months ago and the
car runs fine once it is push started. But once I turn off the engine, I
can't start it back up again. I read the service manual to try to get a
better understanding of the primary start up process. I have a feeling
that it might be the starter but I don't know how to test it to be sure.
In addition to this, there is the clutch switch and relay, ignition switch
and relay, and the relay inhibitor (what is this?). What is the best way
to individually troubleshoot this problem? How do I know if the anti-theft
is enabling a start kill mechani
sm. If so, why does push starting the car byself the alarm?

it sounds like the clutch switch/relay might be what tells the car the guy has the clutch pedal pressed. That may be bad, cause the starting problem sounds like what hapens when you don't depress the clutch to start, but it could be the starter too.
I think some shops like autozone/pepboys etc can test things like starters. I don't know how tough it is to remove them from these cars, but pull it out, and take it down. probably call and ask first though.

relay inhibitor....no idea, but on my 55 ford i just had to install an ignition resistor... kind of sounds like inhibitor doesn't it...
