'99 Grand Am Won't Start No Matter What velcroshoes6 09-18-2007, 06:55 PM
I have been having problems with my 1999 Grand Am for months now. The problems started simple: Sometimes when I would go to start the car, it wouldn't. (It would turn over but wouldn't run.) I would try again and it would start. These problems have been increasing over the months (it would take me a good 10 or more minutes of trying to turn the car over, and then it would finally start), to the point where it won't start at ALL. When I could start it, if I took my foot off the gas (going downhill, for example), the car would die. Like it's not getting fuel to the engine? It has been "dead" for about two months. It will turn over, but won't run. There have been no "check engine" lights on in my car since these problems started. My boyfriend has replaced so far (within the last two days): Battery Spark Plugs Fuel Pump Fuel/Air Filter My dad had thought it was a problem in the battery. When he would charge the battery, it would start up after being on the charger for 10-15 minutes. We bought a new battery and it started up perfectly 10 times in a row. Once we took it out for a drive, we turned it off again and it wouldn't start. The fuel pump was just replaced and that hasn't changed a thing. Everytime we take the car to mechanics, they tell us there is no problem with the vehicle because they can always get it to start right up. My boyfriend is extremely frustrated with the car because he has put a lot of money into it so far. If anybody can suggest something we haven't thought of already, it would be very much appreciated!!! velcroshoes6 xeroinfinity 09-18-2007, 10:09 PM Welcome to AF. Sounds like you have your hands full. Could be a faulty starter or the soleniod. Could be the plug wires, or the Ignition control module(ICM).... even bad coils, or it might be a loose connection(s) in the grounding. Also it could even be the ignition switch.
