Whistle sound?

Hey fella's, my car has been having what appears to be a whistling type sound while accelerating. It changes pitch while the engine is going through the gears. It has slowly been getting more noticeable. Also my power steering sounds pretty bad but the level is where it should be. I noticed some gooking stuff on one of the hoses coming from the pump could the hose be clogged up? Any help would be appreciated!

1997 3.1L 74,000 miles. Seems to be losing a little power as well. Mechanic suggest checking MAF.

May have a belt driven accessory dragging, making the belt slip over it a bit. Take the belt off and turn all the pulleys, should turn easily but quietly and with a slight "damped" feel...if you have one that feels notchy, or spins really free with a rumble or hiss in the bearing, you found the problem most likely....also watch the belt tensioner arm when it's running...they usually really hop if there's a draggy pulley involved, can even be the tensioner pulley bearing.

Alternators on these will howl too when the bearings start to go bad...the alternator doesn't usually last long once this starts...

OK Update! My car is really loosing power here lately there are 2 seperate noises coming from car one is coming from the bottom pulley on the car closes to the radiator. The other is when the wheels move it sounds like the same noise just intenser. I also noticed a lot of blackish looking film on all belt driven accessories some places it looks wet other places it has a very black powder film all over it and I mean it is extremely black. The car only has 74,000 miles with religous oil changes. The bootom hose on the power steering resevoir is soked with this black gook but it is on down the hose before you notice it not at the resevoir but where it go's behind the engine heading to the otherside. Any body understand what this could be? Also would this have anything to do with lack of power? I did notice that the pulley tensioner is moving up and down quite a bit. Any help would be great!

OK... I believe I have an Air Compressor going bad. If the bottom Accessory closes to the radiator is the Air Compressor then it is going bad. It was very wet with what appeared to be oil all over the unit and it looked like it sprayed all over the metal lines going there around it. Does the compressor itself have oil in it? Would this problem be causing lack of power?

Yes the A/C compressor has oil in it. The bearing in the front of the compressor is probably going bad.

Was the A/C inoperative before this happened?

The black stuff is probably oil mixed with rubber dust from the belt coming apart.

Gotta take that belt off and confirm what's happening.

Yes, that pulley is the a/c compressor. As Jeff stated, the compressor contains oil, and that could very well be the black goo all over. Normally a/c compressors fail in one of two ways. The compressor itself fails internally (like yours, the seal fails and it starts leaking refrigerant and oil), or the clutch pulley bearing fails (it will make a scraping noise and you'll see metal shavings around the pulley). The type of failure you have is regretfully the worst kind. It allows metal particles to get in the a/c system, requiring replacement of the accumulator, orifice, flushing of the evap core and condenser, as well as compressor replacement to fix it right. Failure to do all that will risk another failure, as the metal particles will ruin the new compressor if not properly removed from the system.

Ok fellas...I will remove the belt ASAP. The AC is still blowing strong nice and cold. Would this cause the loss of power? Are there any sensors around the pulley accessories that may be gooked up causing this problem that I should check?

Also, since my AC is still blowing cold and there does not appear to be any shavings any where would the system still need to be flushed to the extent mentioned above? Also if you can think of any sensors that I need to look at that could be causing the lack of power due to the gook please let me know. Thanks

Ok fellas I pulled the belt and all turned pretty freely but the power steering which felt free but did not turn as freely like the others. The AC compressor did turn easily but had a dragging noise to it like something on the inside was rubbing. What should I do. Thinking about bypassing but if it is fixable like maybe front bearings I would rather replace. What would you do? I also noticed that the plate on the front clutch felt a little loose and could actually touch the pulley without a doubt should this happen?
