how does that work? i get it shuts down 4 cylinders, but do they just have some sort of compression relef for those cyliners or what? do they stop fuel going to them?

Shuts down every other cylinder in firing order. Shuts off fuel and spark. Stops sending pressurized oil to those lifters so they basically collapse.
