95 Lumina cranks wont start, Audio included

Hey everyone,

Well my luminas made it 6 months without a problem untill now. For two weeks it has stalled at red lights and idle, bogging down to 500rpm untill it stalls, unless I put my foot on the gas. A few days ago While accelerating the engine bogged down and stalled, and will not start again.

Audio file link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/3476212cee7111/
After about 10 seconds the PCV valve line will pop off, heard at the end.

Things I have done:
-New plugs/wires about 1.5 months ago (Bosch platinum plugs)
-Checked ICM at autozone, said its fine
-Checked coil packs with multimeter, all fine
-Fuel pump does come on
-Tested 7x crankshaft senser at the ICM with meter, reads fine
-Checked vacuum hoses, seals
-Cleaned throttle body and sprayed carb cleaner into intake, no start
-Replaced air filter
-Checked all fuses
-Pulled TCC fuse still wouldnt start

My next step would be to buy a code reader and check for codes, my check engine light does not come on when the key is turned, so I dont think it works.

Started acting different when I put the plugs/wires on, but ive checked them and even swapped out the old ones and no change. Ive also put fuel injecter cleaner in full tank about 2 weeks before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I cant afford to have this towed and taken to a repair shop.

Thanks,
Brian

Boy, is it me or does that sound like a timing belt/chain has jumped? Anyone else?

if your car is 1995 it should be obd1 in whitch you dont need scanner tool to pull codes

I thought it was something with the timing as well, just didnt want to take the whole assembly apart to find out it was fine.

I thought you had to use a cross over jumper to read codes, and that flashed the engine light for the code in the(haynes) manual. According to the car manual the engine light should come on before starting, and my light doesnt, that why I belive my engine light doesnt work/illuminate.

btw its a 3.1

Thanks for the help guys/gals

hey brian,
does sorta like timing.. my 95 has run great... 189000 on it no problems (3.4) however my belt just broke, put new timing belts and pulleys on it and it has a bad noise in it. the motor seems tight had it to the repair shop for well it was there a better part of a month, and they can not find where the noise is from. i never did timing on a dual overhead cam so i am a bit lost on that, but i hear you have to line the pulleys and cam by hand through the vaulve covers.

95 has hybrid diagnostics, so the old jumper wire trick won't work. You must use a scan tool to pull the codes (and most of the cheap ones at AZ/Advance can't pull them). No check engine light at key-on indicates either the bulb is burned out, or there is a problem with the ECM (fuse blown or it's bad). The ECM's in these cars are mounted under the hood, so they are prone to water intrusion/corrosion issues (especially if you live in an area where they use salt to clear the roads in winter).

Your 95 has 2 crank position sensors, one behind the harmonic balancer, and one in the back of the block. You need to be sure you have a signal from both, or the car may not start.

Since it won't start on starting fluid, it's a spark/timing related issue. Bosch Platinum plugs are absolute junk, but since you swapped the old plugs back in and there was no change we can rule them out (unless the old plugs were completely worn out).

Thanks,

What plugs would you recommend?

And yes I was going to get a cheap code puller but since they dont work guess not.

Were can I test the 24x Crankshaft sensor? I tried to locate the actual sensor but I cant seem to find it for the life of me. Right now its parked on a hill so I cant get under it to look at anything.

And the starter fluid should be straight past the throttle plate into the upper intake correct?

Thanks again,
Brian

I just fixed a no start condition on my 95 lumina (3.1L) after a freaking squirrel chewed part of my wiring harness. Maybe this will help. The 24X (high resolution) crankshaft position sensor is behind the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine, but won't be the cause of a no start. It is used to improve idle quality under 1200rpm once the engine is running. If the pcm doesn't recieve it's signal, it defaults back to the 3x (low resolution) CKP. The PCM looks for the 3X sensor pulses during cranking & uses the signal to control spark timing and enable the fuel injectors. If no signal is detected during cranking, a DTC 82 is set and the engine will not start. The sensor is mounted low (just above oil pan rail), near the front of the block, on the side closest to the firewall. I had to loosen the "dogbone" engine mounts @top/front & rotate the motor forward to access the connector. The two wire harness runs from the sensor along the block, up around the back end of the motor (under exhaust) to a two prong connector at the ignition module next to the ignition coils. The wires are yellow & purple. Not sure if all this will help, but if you can scan it and get a code 82 it will be this circuit or the 3X sensor itself.

I will see if I can scan Chart A-3 from the factory service manual & post it somehow. It details the flowchart for diagnosing a cranks but will not run condition...

here's the chart (2 pages):

Hope it helps!

Well now it wont even crank, theres a metalic noise coming from the engine, so im thinkning its the timing belt. According to Haynes manuel I pretty much have to take apart everything in order to get to the chain to check, is all that necessary?

Well looks like im going to have to have it towed to a shop. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

your car has a timing chain, the 3.1 has no timing belt. That only applies to the 3.4 DOHC engine.

Opps,

I ment chain, just wrote wrong thing :\
