My 2000 Newbeetle just started multiple failures! No headlamps, no A/C or heat (fan not working), no turn signals, horn, wipers...
Is there some relay that controls all these items? Is it an ignition switch problem? I checked the fuse blocks (door jam and battery cover) with no faults found.
An help would be appreciated.
Thanks Eric

:banghead: Problem is the ignition switch and connector. A loose connection caused heat, melting switch and connector. It almost looks like the wire bundle was a bit short causing the connector to be pulled when steering column is adjusted (up ans down).:screwy:What were they thinking when they designed this electrical nightmare!
The connector and switch can be accessed by removing cover on left side of steering column (drivers left).

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I searched this site and found your post. Thank you so much for going back in to say what the problem was. I took my car to my mechanic and told him what I had found out. It saved so much of his time because this is what he checked first. When the ignition switch burned up it melted my wiring harness and plug. VW does not sell just the wiring harness so he had to find it at a junk yard. They had to cut it out of another car and spice the wires in my car together. It worked and now I am a happy VW owner once again.

Thanks again for posting your results!

Usually any car out there when the headlights, turn signals, horn, alarm all have issues at the same time its the ignition switch.
