Hello everyone, ran into a little trouble with a 1986 fifth avenue that I can not seem to solve. It has been sitting for a bit and given to me to use, and since we could use a second car and it is in good shape I am trying to get it going and running like it should. We have done some tune up work and have the same problem reacuring. When I have the car running at idol it is fine and there are no problems, until we hook up the ECS system again and then the car will bog down on and off. when we disconnect it it will idol just fine, no problems until we drive it and then it runs fine while it is moving, as soon as we come to a stop the car will flutter and try to stall out. We have done a bunch of work, changed the idol speed, checked for good vacumn made sure there are no leaks that we can find and it is still doing it but not as bad. The car stays running most of the time now but still stalls out a few times a day when comming to a stop or slowing down enough say within 10km/hr of a stop. At this point we figure it has to do with something electrical but we do not even know where to start looking. Kinda banging our heads around trying to find it. If anyone has any ideas, or has seen anything like it please share....Thanx!!

Turn the ignition switch on and off 3 times and leave it on the last time. Read the number of flashes like 15 or 21. There may be more than one trouble code. Tell me and I will tell you what it means.

Tried it when I could see better and either I am doing something wrong, or something is just not working. I am getting nothing flashing at me anywhere, mind you maybe the engine is not coding.

When you turn the ignition switch on do you get a check engine light to come on ?

Either the bulb is burned out or the computer is not getting power. Get a scan tool and try to read the trouble codes. If you get codes the bulb is burned out. No codes and either the powder to the computer is out(look for a fuse) or the computer is bad.

We were reading up and thought we had the problem nabed, thought it was the electronic spark control system, but that apparently has absolutly no bearing on how the car runs....we were also told that is the computer in that car, however when we got it, that was completly unhooked, we hooked it up again but now that we check it , when we plug it in and unplug it while the car is on, it apparently has no bearing on how it is running....

First never plug or unplug a computer when the engine is running. It could burn it out. It sounds like you are either not getting power to the computer or the computer is bad.

Is this ever the computer for this car? that is what I am looking for, I can replace it but there is no point if it is not going to help...

Get a wiring diagram(Haynes) and test for power to the computer.

Computer was doing nothing, it had been retrofitted and disconected completly. The Carb was the problem, it was dumping to much fuel down into the engine stalling it out, flooding it. Replaced the carb, problem gone. Car runs perfect now. thanx for your help!

I think your car is too old to have a computer. I would check the fuel filter. Those spark controls do have some bearing on the running of a car. I have a Cordoba that one went in it and i just swap another in and it was fine. They hay have updated your system to run with out it, if thats the case it may be the problem. You have a carb, so checke the fuel filter or the carb it self may be dirty inside.

It was the carb, we replaced it and all went back to the way it should. Some problem with the float, whenever the car hit a bump or a nudge it was flooding the car and stalling it out.
