1999 Dodge Ram Van - thinking of buying

I am looking at purchasing a 1999 Dodge Van, Mark III for my family. It has the 6 cylinder engine and 98,000 miles on it.
I don't know a whole lot about Dodges, but I am curious as to the reliability of these engines and transmissions. It is an automatic, but I don't know what speed. Maybe this model came with just one type?
Anyway, it looks to be in good shape. I am a little hesitant because we had a '97 Dodge Grand Caravan a couple of years ago and the transmission went at 83,000 miles. Didn't know if they used the same engine/transmissions in the Rams or not.
Any advice is appreciated. Also, is the Mark III a custom/conversion package?
