I have a 99 s10 xtreme 2.2 auto. I had the truck for about a year and it only had 2nd 3rd and reverse. I read this thread re the solenoid:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/t489404.html
I changed the solenoid with this from advanced auto:

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=SAG&MfrPartNumber=520214&PartType=424&PTSet=A

which looked exactly the same as the one I took out.

After the switch the tranny clunked 2-3 times in 1st and then it was butter smooth. All gears worked including OD(did not have previously). Worked for about 2-3 miles of stop and go. After I came to a stop all of a sudden it started ok in 1st gear and then when it switched 2nd gear the wheels locked up. I had to drive it in 1st gear all the way home, good thing I was close. The tranny will go in D,3,1 however when I put it into 2 it does not do anything.

So I took the pan off again... found a bunch of metal shavings...everything looked good... I even took the solenoid out again and put it back in... started it up....same thing..... What can it be? I am so pissed right now...should of left it alone and just deal with 2nd,3rd and Reverse:banghead:....Please help me out. Thanks in advance!

Update: IF I blip the throttle in 2nd around 2-3k it will move for a second and then stop. I tried to take it out and as soon as it changes 2nd it locks the wheels. Could it be the 2-3 shift solenoid or are my internals screwed?

You have an internal problem for sure. If you have metal shavings insdie the pan like you mentioned, there is something nopt right internally.
