Hi fellas,

My bro in law has a 96 olds 88. The car will never start on the first try, but always on the second try. Until lately. Saturday we were going to change the fuel pump. I took off the fuel feed line to the rail and when he turned the key to on, it pumped for 2 secs and then stopped. It did this several times so I concluded fuel pump ok. Fixed some cracked vac lines to the air box station and took it for a spin. It felt good. Later that night we went to eat dinner and before he shut the car off, he went to raise the drivers window(pwr windows) and the car cut itself off. Now it will not start. Sunday morning we go to tow it home. Playing with some fuses, the window decides to work and the FP also. So the car starts. He then proceeds to let the window up and it dies. This happened several times. We hook up the rope and away we go.

About 7 miles into the tow I start playing with the window, for the next 5 miles it works consistently. We pull over and try our luck driving it home. Well it makes it another 10 miles no problem. Pull in his driveway and put it in park it idles for several mins and I go to let the window up and it dies.

As of now it will not start.

Any help is appreciated

Welcome to AF. This may be an issue with the gd junction in the harness under the l/s front carpet near the seat and door, it may look ok, but open the insulation and look for corrosion. This gds the fp and the window motors. BTW, your description of the problem and symptoms was excellent.

There is a ground shunt just in front of the drivers seat under the carpet it gets corroded and there are at least 6 ground wires located there it is taped to the big harness that runs there. The harness is along the drivers side sill plate, windows fuel pump etc all ground through it, I just cut it out and soldered all the grounds together never had a problem since over a year ago
