1992 Buick Roadmaster intermitten starter problems

After a drive my roadmaster had sluggish start if it didn't cool down. One day after a long drive, I let it set about 15 min and came back out to start and nothing, the usual empty sound you hear when the starter is shot. Went backto tow home several hours later and it started right up. I am certain that the heat of the motor has something to do with this. Do I replace the starter, selonoid, or lookfor a short elsewhere. I am not mechanical but somewhat short on cash. If the problem is intermitten and they test the starter at the part store, won't it show up okay if it is not warm? v-8 engine.

This certainly sounds like the starter has taken a dump, but before replacing the starter/solenoid, it would be prudent to inspect all battery connections and battery condition under load. While you are at it, have the alternator checked also. If everything mentioned above checks OK, time for a starter/solenoid replacement. :uhoh:

I had the same problem, I had mine towed home and then I put a new starter in it. (as soon as it was off the tow truck, it started):grinyes: A few weeks later I took the old starter apart. The commutator brushes were worn and sometimes after it heated up, they wouldn't make contact. New brushes were $9. I cleaned + checked the starter, painted it and now have it for a spare.
