While I was picking up the wife’s new G35 from the dealership they tried to sell me a paint protection system for $500. I think they call it “Resistall”. Does anybody know about this product?

When i picked up my G35, they tried to sell me that also. I dug a little further and found that you may not be buying anything at all... Just insurance. All the cars come with a protective coating on them already from the a manufacturer, a chemical bond that acts with the paint to protect it from acid rain, love bugs etc. All you are buying for the $500, is insurance that it will work.
Example:
If you do not get the $500 Insurance and you have paint damage from Acid rain, you go to the body shop and pay to have someone either wet sand or professionaly buff it out.
With the Insurance, you go back to the dealer and they will get it out for you at no charge. Wet sand, buff, or repaint the part that is affected.
I think that also covers any damage to the seats or interion cloth.

That was my take on the whole thing. I could be wrong.

Every car dealer has their own scheme...I worked as a detailer for an Acura dealership, so let me let you in on a little (obvious) secret:

you're basically paying for a wax job. My mother bought her car and paid some ridiculous amount for "Exterior protection". Basically it's just a detail. Wash, wax, etc. We never used any special chemicals or solvents. They just made waxing sound real fancy. So as long as you keep your car waxed, you should be just fine.

Agreed...the highest profit margins at a dealership come from these add-on's. I never buy any exterior paint protection, or interior guard, etc. Don't you think that if they made some great miracle paint protectant, that atleast the high-end cars would come with this standard? I still see Ferrari owners waxing their cars.

There's no substitute for a good wax. Go buy some Zaino, and go to it. It lasts longer than any wax I've seen.

I ran across your post when I was searching for the Resist All products to buy wash, wax, and glass cleaner it comes in a kit from the dealer when you purchase the protection.
I did buy the protection on a 2007 Suburban with Burmuda Blue Paint (very expensive paint) it cost $280 and it paid off within the first 5 months. My wife ran over some paint on the road and it splattered all over the right side of the vehicle and on the rear. It took me a day to figure out who to contact for the protection plan but once I did it was a very positive experience. They sent out a technician to my my work place and he was not sure he could get it off because in Texas it is hot and the paint was dried on already but after a few hours he had removed every spot of paint and it was no charge to me. This will include any stains on the inside fabric or anything on the paint. If it can not be taken off they will paint or replace at no charge. I just worry about after the five year plan is up if they offer to extend I will purchase.:)

I bought ResistAll protection with my new car purchase last spring, (09 Corolla – silver paint). I was led to believe that it was a protective coating that was already put on the car before I took it off the lot.

What I got for my $395. was a little tote bag containing spray bottles of interior and exterior cleaning products. I'm an old woman and work a 60 hour week. I don’t have time to hang around in my driveway, playing with this stuff. So they assured me that there was already a coating of ResistAll on the car…that this was just to continue the protection.

Needless to say, the tote bag is still sitting in the corner of my utility closet. I pass by it every week on my way to the car wash.

Yesterday the snow froze on my car and when I pushed a large chunk of the ice off the hood, the ice left a scrape mark on the paint. That has never happened to any of my cars before. I had a Tercel for 12 years and when I replaced the car, the paint job was still beautiful. I at one point purchased an 87 Camry. I replaced it when it was 21 years old. The paint no longer shined. But it survived years of ice, scrapers rough treatment with very few fine scratch marks. In fact there are less scratches on that old car than there are on my new Corolla.

This is the first time I’ve purchased any kind of protection for my car’s finish and the first time I’ve ever had a problem with the paint being so fragile. I can’t decide which is worst, the paint job or the ResistAll.

Okay, the ResistAll might have worked better had I taken the time to use the contents of that little tote bag. But they did state that the ResistAll was already on the car.

I’ve decided that perhaps I’ll write off the whole mess as a loss and consider the $395. a charitable donation to my Toyota dealership. I might just go get a decent custom paint job this coming summer, with a couple layers of clear-coat.

But you guys sound like you know more about this stuff than I do. Any suggestions will be seriously considered.

I was taken by the Toyota dealership. $285 for a totbag of windex and car wax. A big scam by the dealerships to make money. Never again.
