Hi,

I have a 2000 Dodge Neon 2.0L SOHC. Just replaced the timing belt and water pump. All the timing marks line up perfectly however the car will only run if you keep your foot on the gas. Also runs really rough. Any help :banghead: would be greatly appreciated. Almost forgot I also replaced the Cam position sensor.

Thanks

When our 97 was doing the same thing, it was because the Idle Air Control Valve wasnt working. It had apparently stuck in the closed position, or was clogged. The new valve cost about $60, and took less than an hour to replace. Hardest part was getting the little bolts out without breaking them off. I would advise using plenty of penetrating oil.
We replaced the throttle position sensor at the same time - since it was as old as the IACV.

Hey guys i was reading through to see if i have missed anything. exact same model and circumstances. runs kinda rough while at idle but when you give it a little gas it purrs pretty good so i pulled the plugs and they were burnt out to .70 when they supposed to be .35. so did i mess up the timing? or the plugs or the valves? the marks lined up and i followed the book. i mean if the marks line up its in time right? Trying to get my pops rolling again to get to golf course!! Thanks guys! Mike

If this situation happens to you do yourself a favor go ahead and take the heads off and check the valves. this car was running when the water pump locked up. so i should have checked the valves. i ran a compression test today and low-and-behold 120,150,0,and180. now i get to do double work. if you have any doubt do no listen to those who say "nah it didnt hurt those valves" thats easy for someone else to say when they are not doing the work! talk to a real mechanic and see what they say. hope this helps someone out there.
