My wife turned her car on the other day and turned on the ac full blast and went closed the door and the car locked. She didnt have a spare key so by the time they got the door open, the car had been running for a half an hour.
How bad is that for the car and is there anything it would damage?

Itll be just fine as long as it didnt overheat or anything. Couldnt damage it any more than driving it around would.

To me that is the same thing as people who have the remote car starters and start their vehicles with either the AC or heat on and leave them running for long periods of time. It just wastes gas.

Assuming you don't consider that bad, then nothing bad happened

It's no different to people idling their car with AC on in gridlock.
It's designed to work fine like that.

The car should be fine as long as you're not idling the car for long periods of time consistently. Always warm up the car for a minute or two, even in the summer. Given this was an accident, I don't think you let your car idle for more than 10 minutes at a time.
