Hi there,

Names Rob, I'm new to this forum. Anyways I'm experiencing a clunk when I come to a near stop on my 02 overland. Its like the transmission is gearing down hard. Also when I'm slowing down and then accelerating it pauses a second before clunking into gear. Doesn't do it all the time. Seems worse when I'm going down hill on a steep grade. Seems like the load is releasing hard or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My 01 Cherokee does the same thing you are describing for the most part. As I have been told by my mechanic and many others on this forum, that is "normal" for a Jeep for the most part.

I have been told to check the u-joints to make sure they are tight, nothing leaking in the transmission area, the trans fluid is normal and not fried. There are any number of things that can cause your problem.

I would check other threads on this site and other Jeep sites for a discusion on this problem. I found I was not the only one describing what you seem to be experiencing.

I have that too, and was told it was normal for Jeep GC's... I remember looking this up before, and reading that it was caused because the Spider Gears get locked up because they are different types of metals or something along those lines. I was told it was nothing to worry about, but if it gets worse, replace the spider gears with after market ones that are the same materials... I know that probably doesn't help as far as explanations go, but it's just what my memory is recalling at the moment.

Not normal. Does it feel like a "thump" coming from the rear end when you just about come to a stop or let your foot off the brake?
The fix is simple.

There is also a TSB for the 1999-2004 Grands, but it can happen on any Cherokee.

Thanks Bob D, I saw the TSB already. I'm gonna get the splines greased and see how that goes. Gonna check the drive shafts and u-joint for play first.

Yah they told me a the dealer that it was the brake pads...I had em changed and it didn't solve the problem.
