I have a 1986 toyota pickup 4x4 with a 1985 22r motor from our old pickup. The truck got hot just one time and it had water in the oil. My husband changed the oil and tried differrent types of engine block but it leaks all the water out. We don't know if it's a cracked block or a blown head gasket. We bought a 1987 toyota pickup that runs great and it has a 22r motor in it . The problem is we don't want to switch out the motor if it just a blown head gasket because both trucks are in great conditions. So how can we check it to find out which one it is ???

If your problem is like mine i have a 1994 22re that had a timing chain issue. The timing chain got wobbly and rubbed a hole in the timing chain cover and thus water entering the oil and vise versa. It ran hot maybe once too...never really effected the performance of the the engine to bad.Usually a blown headgasket or a cracked block will have some poor performance issues. If yours is running good but oil in water and water in oil i would check out your timing chain.

Have the cooling system pressure tested, and the engine compression tested.

As far as the worn TC rubbing a hole in the TC cover, you can pull the valve cover and the TC will be right in front of you. You can check for excess slack by pulling on it. You may be able to check for a wear hole usinga flash light.

BTW, a blown HG or cracked head are more common on these than a cracked block.

thank you for your advice. Me and my husband are more hopeful now . My husband and two of sons had built and I helped some too, from the frame and cab . Changing the motor was a pain. I guess the head gasket if thats the problem or the timing chain will be probly be a chore but thats ok we'll still have two economical trucks!!! Thanks again!
